The Boston Planning Department this month approved a wave of new development projects across Boston, advancing a citywide effort to create a more resilient, affordable, and equitable city. Among the approved proposals is a significant new transit-oriented development in East Boston located at 9 Chelsea Street.
The 9 Chelsea Street project will build a new mixed-use building featuring 120 residential units, 22 of which will be designated as income-restricted. The homes will offer a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom layouts. Designed with both residents and the broader neighborhood in mind, the ground floor will provide retail and amenity spaces, while the building itself will include a roof deck.
Ideally situated between the Maverick and Airport MBTA stations, the development strongly aligns with the goals of PLAN: East Boston. By bringing ground-floor retail to the area, the project aims to activate Maverick Square and support a highly pedestrian-friendly environment.
Project highlights and community benefits include:
• Support for approximately 73 construction jobs, as well as permanent retail jobs
• Strict adherence to Passive House and LEED Gold sustainability standards
• Construction of new, wider sidewalks in the vicinity of the building
• Installation of new bike parking facilities
• A $49,000 contribution to the Boston Transportation Department to support the city’s bikeshare system
• A $103,000 contribution to the Boston Transportation Department to support the Maverick Square Transportation Action Plan
