Strawberry Festival at Grace Church

Grace Church Federated, 760 Saratoga Street, East Boston, will have a fund-raising Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the church basement. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Festivalgoers will eat strawberry short cake and hear songs by a local singing group as well as participate in a sing-a-long. St Anthony Spaghetti Dinner

Please join us on Tuesday, June 11, for our annual St. Anthony Spaghetti dinner.  The evening begins with a special Mass in honor of St. Anthony at 4:30 pm. Following Mass, join us in the Parish Hall for a delicious home-cooked spaghetti and meatball dinner, salad, and dessert. And get your feet moving with live accordion polka music that will be played during dinner.

Tickets are $12 per person, $6 for children. Tables of 10 are also available for $120. Tickets will be sold after the weekend Masses. They can also be reserved by contacting the rectory at 617-567-5776 or by email [email protected]

Parks Department Summer Guide Now Online

If you are looking for some outdoor fun this summer in City of Boston parks simply go to the City of Boston website where you can view the Boston Parks and Recreation Department’s full schedule of free summer events under the Spotlight section at www.boston.gov/departments/parks-and-recreation#spotlight.

Concerts, movies, fitness, sports centers, watercolor painting workshops, and a wide range of children’s activities – there’s something for everyone, all offered free of charge.  The schedule includes the popular Artists in Residence Craft Workshops for ages 3 to 10 in parks citywide July 9, through August 16, the Boston Children’s Summer Festival at Franklin Park on August 20, park visits from the New England Aquarium, Movie Nights in 11 locations, and the opening of the Boston Common Frog Pond spray pool on June 27.  

Musical offerings include the annual Dorothy Curran Wednesday Night Concert Series sponsored by Bank of America kicking off July 17 with the Total Access Chicago tribute band on City Hall Plaza at 7 p.m., ParkARTS Citywide Neighborhood Concerts from July 10, to August 5, Summer Sundays in the Park at Jamaica Pond on July 28, and August 11, and the sizzling hot Tito Puente Latin Music Series in the South End, East Boston, Mission Hill, and Jamaica Plain from July 11 through August 15.

Annual Award Recognizes Those Who Make a Powerful Difference in their Community

AARP is now accepting nominations for its 2019 Massachusetts Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors 50+ Commonwealth residents who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich the lives of their community members. 

 “AARP Massachusetts is excited to shine a light on 50+ Bay Staters who are using what they’ve learned in life to make a difference in the lives around them,” said Mike Festa, AARP Massachusetts State Director. 

 Nominations will be evaluated by the Massachusetts state office based on how the volunteer’s work has improved the community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. The award recipient will be announced in early fall.

AARP Massachusetts Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Nominee must be 50 years or older.

· The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.

· The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must reflect AARP’s vision and purpose.

· The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must be replicable and provide inspiration for others to volunteer.

· Couples or partners who perform service together are also eligible; however, teams are not eligible.

· This is not a posthumous award.

Parks Department Announces 2019 Fenway Challenge Series

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the Boston Red Sox, and Highland Street Foundation team up once again to present the Fenway Challenge featuring the Red Sox Showcase in local parks on three Tuesdays in July and August. 

The free series gives children ages 7 to 14 the opportunity to test their pitching accuracy, swing in a batting cage, and practice base stealing.  Food and entertainment including virtual reality, a replica Green Monster, and Red Sox mascots Wally and Tessie will provide participants with an unforgettable field day.  Participants will also have the opportunity to win Red Sox tickets. 

The Fenway Challenge will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.  The dates are July 16, at Doherty Playground (Town Field), 1545 Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester; July 30 at Lee Playground, 775 East First Street, South Boston; and August 6 at Carter Playground, 709 Columbus Avenue, South End.

Trip to Foxwoods

The Joe Guarino/ St Lazarus Bowling League is having a day trip to Foxwoods on Sunday June 9.

The buses leave at 7:45 a.m. from St. Lazarus Church on Ashley Street East Boston.

The cost is $30 per person which includes a $10 food coupon and $10 in slot play.

Muffins, turnovers and juices are served on the bus.

Mayor Walsh Announces 2019 Coffee Hour Series

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will host the 20th Annual Neighborhood Coffee Hour Series in local parks citywide through June 19.

“I look forward to the Neighborhood Coffee Hours every year as a way to start the spring season by getting out to the neighborhoods to engage directly with our residents,” said Mayor Walsh.

The Neighborhood Coffee Hours give residents the opportunity to speak directly with Mayor Walsh and staff from City departments about open space and other needs in their neighborhoods.  Through these discussions and a suggestion box at each site, Mayor Walsh looks forward to hearing how the City of Boston can improve upon local parks, public areas, and city services.

Participants will enjoy coffee and breakfast treats provided by Dunkin’ Donuts and fresh fruit from Star Market.  In addition, each family in attendance will receive a flowering plant grown in the city’s greenhouses as a gift from Mayor Walsh.  Residents at the event will also be eligible to win a raffle prize from Dunkin’ Donuts. Information will be available on City programs from the Boston Public Library, Boston Public Schools, Boston Police Department, and Boston Centers for Youth & Families.

All coffee hours will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. unless otherwise noted.  Locations are weather permitting. Dates for the full schedule of Mayor Walsh’s 2019 Neighborhood Coffee Hours are as follows:

Grace Church News Services

Grace Church Federated is an Episcopal/United Church of Christ church located at 760 Saratoga Street in East Boston.  All are welcome.  Please join us for Sunday morning worship at 9:30 a.m., followed by a coffee hour.  We also have a food pantry on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until noon in the church basement.  There are a number of ways you can help us to serve East Boston.  Volunteer at or contribute to the food pantry.  Sing with the Festival of Lessons and Carols choir.  Bring a dish to the monthly Sunday evening community suppers.  Participate in the Sunday worship service.  Help with SundaySchool.  Visit the Grace Church web site at www.gracechurcheastie.org or call the church at 617-569-5358 for more information.

East Boston Social Center’s Senior Program now offering Spanish Language Classes

The Senior Program at the East Boston Social Centers is now offering Spanish Language Classes for adults over 60 years old.  Classes are held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Room 209.  All are welcome to attend.  Class is taught by Mr. Montaro.  No need to register, just come by on Wednesday at 10 a.m. for this fun class.  The East Boston Social Centers is located at 68 Central Square.

Learn Italian Free

The class will be held at Robert DeLeo Senior Center, 35 Harvard Street Winthrop  for residents age 55 and above.

Whether you have Italian ancestry, or just want to learn one of the world’s most beautiful languages, join us at  informal  and friendly Italian language and culture classes. Wednesday afternoons from 1:15 to  2:45 p.m.

East Boston Senior Lunch Program

If you are 60+ years of age, the East Boston Social Centers at 68 Central Square in East Boston has a table and a meal waiting for you!

The Senior Lunch Program sponsored by ETHOS Congregate Meal Program provides a hot, nutritious lunch, along with wonderful socialization, Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  A suggested donation of $2 is asked.

We welcome seniors from our East Boston Community and surrounding areas.

East Boston Tech Meetup

The purpose of the East Boston Tech Meetup is to build a community of people currently working in tech or those aspiring to move into a tech career who live or work in East Boston. These meetings will be held in the heart of Maverick Landing conveniently located steps from the Maverick T station, in the Maverick Landing Meeting House at 31 Liverpool Street.
