The Davis Companies announced that they have finalized an agreement with the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center (EBNHC) to redevelop four parcels owned by EBNHC located along Bremen and Orleans Streets in East Boston. The parcels are currently used by EBNHC as surface parking lots and one building containing back of house services, both of which will be relocated within East Boston.
Located close to Maverick Square and Airport Station, the future housing development will be designed to take advantage of its access to mass transit to minimize residents’ reliance on vehicular transportation. Three of the four sites sit adjacent to the Mary Ellen Welch Greenway, offering an opportunity to create a thoughtful gateway space within the cherished public green space, enhancing its access, use and enjoyment for all of the East Boston community. As a walkable, transit-oriented development, the project will be designed to reduce car ownership, eliminate parking and lessen traffic and pollution.
The Davis Companies is known in the East Boston community through its development of The Mark at 99 Summer Street, formerly home of Hodge Boiler Works. During the permitting process for The Mark, The Davis Companies worked with many of the neighborhood’s community groups and formed several partnerships with local nonprofits.
“We are looking forward to once again working with the East Boston community to build upon all that makes East Boston a resilient and special place to call home” said Davis. “By supporting the Health Center’s programming, developing a project that minimizes congestion, adds to the neighborhood’s housing stock, enhances open space and contributes to a walkable and connected East Boston, we believe we can do just that.”
EBNHC has been a leader in healthcare for the last 50 years, treating patients in East Boston and its surrounding communities without regard to age, income, insurance status, language, culture, or social circumstances. To preserve the critical services provided by EBNHC, the proceeds from the project will be immediately reinvested in the Health Center, which serves more than 70% of East Boston residents and employs more than 1,200 individuals.
“Funding for the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center is critically important,” stated Stephen Davis, Managing Director for Development at The Davis Companies. “The Health Center and its staff work tirelessly on the front lines serving many of the community’s most vulnerable residents,” he continued, “and we are honored to have this opportunity to support the Health Center’s work at a crucial time.”
“East Boston Neighborhood Health Center is committed to serving our neighbors and we have engaged in a multi-year, deliberative process to chart a course for our financial future,” said Ernani DeAraujo, Vice President & General Counsel at EBNHC. “After much consideration and input from local development groups, EBNHC is happy to be working with the Davis Companies on a project that we hope will positively impact the East Boston community and our patients.”
Community Feedback
Prior to moving forward with the City of Boston’s permitting processes, The Davis Companies will be seeking community input relative to its development. The company plans to conduct outreach in a number of ways including digital surveys, online meetings and mailings to gauge public sentiment and catalogue community priorities. Once those priorities are understood, the Davis Companies will work to incorporate those priorities into their development proposal to the City of Boston.
