Malden/East Boston Youth Hockey starts 2015-16 season
MEB Squirts started the season with a statement win on Saturday at the Burlington Ice Palace against Sudbury Maynard Stow (SMS). The goals came earlier and often with MEB up 4-1 by the end of the 1st period. Will Fosdick scored twice with assist from Chris Cecca and Chad Robertson. Inspired by Fosdickís intensity, Ryan Jones scored off a breakaway 40 seconds later. To finish the period, Cecca scored with Fosdick getting the assist. The 2nd period saw goalies Preston Tully and Jake Thomas shut down any attempt by SMS to get back into the game. It was MEBís Jacky Summers who opened up the scoring again in the 3rd period with an assist from Robertson. The goal of the game was scored by Matt Gorosko assisted by Fosdick. This was Goroskoís 1st career goal! The last goal of the game was scored in the final 30 seconds by Robertson, bringing the final score to 7-1. Congratulations MEB on the season opening win & Matt Gorosko on your 1st goal!
Our Mites had a tough start to the season winding up on the other end of 7-1 with a loss to the Cambridge Mite 1 team in Cambridge on SUnday morning.
Opening the season for MEB on Thursday night, the Midgets (senior squad) took the season oppener 3-2 against Haverhill-Pentucket (HP). HP struck first mid-way through the 1st period, but after starting the 2nd a man down, MEB tied it early with a sniper shot from Zack Sheehey. The go ahead goal for came mid-way through the second on a pretty 4-pass play that started just inside our blue line. HP tied it up on a power play goal with play deep in the MEB zone and a dangle of our goalie. MEB then fought off two 5 on 3’s in the third and put one more in the net to take the lead. Nearly holing three empty netters with the HP goalie taken out, we held off a flurry of shots and attacks in the final minute to win 3-2.
The final game of the opening weekend resulted in a split start for the Midgets with a 4-2 loss to Belmont in Somerville late Sunday morning. Belmont took the lead early in the 1st preiod, but MEB answered quickly with a stuffed in goal. Late in the preiod penalties were the main story with MEB facing two 5 on 3 situations. Weak offense and a bad line change leads to 2 on 0 Belmont breakaway and the go ahead goal. The second period ended with MEB on their own 5 on 3 but no goal. Belmont scored a shorthanded goal early in third to take a 3-1 lead. MEB’s shorthanded breakaway leads to penalty shot and goal to draw to 3-2 early in 3rd period, but a lost face off and quick shot midway through the 3rd put Belmont back up by 2, as it would stay until the end of the game.
