Suffolk University Partnership Will Boost East Boston Athletics

The signing of an agreement between Suffolk University and the City of Boston that allows the university’s sports teams to use East Boston Memorial Stadium for home games and practices, but more importantly for the University to maintain and improve the stadium for all East Boston athletes, comes as welcome news.

First we commend Suffolk University Vice President of Government Affairs John Nucci for working hard to make this mutually beneficial agreement a reality. As an East Boston resident Nucci has seen first hand the positive things that are happening in the neighborhood and knowing that he will be involved in this Suffolk-East Boston partnership is great news for our community.

The $500,000 investment being made by Suffolk

University will improve the football, soccer and baseball fields that are currently used by East Boston High School, East Boston Pop Warner (football) East Boston Little League and the East Boston Knights (baseball).

We laud Suffolk University for the generous contribution it will be making to the East Boston Athletic Board that will aid East Boston student-athletes.

But beyond that, there is the prestige of having a prominent university and its student-athletes competing in collegiate athletics in our community. We can envision Suffolk athletes – who have excelled in youth sports and high school athletic themselves – conducting instructional clinics for our youth sports and high school athletes.

East Boston parents and children will have the opportunity to enjoy Suffolk athletic events right in their own backyard so to speak.

This is a terrific partnership between Suffolk and East Boston. We have witnessed the outstanding neighbor that Suffolk has become to Beacon Hill residents and now we look forward to enjoying their presence in East Boston for years to come.
