The undefeated M.E.B. Squirts fought against an all-girl East Coast Wizard squad. Brendan Curtis got M.E.B. on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 1st period. The 2nd period saw the Wizards fight back to score early in the period. It was back and forth until Sean Horkan potted one with help from Nick Summers and that’s how it ended 2-1.

Additionally, the Squirts beat Hyde Park on Sunday to advance to the semi-final round of the Mayor’s Cup tournament.

PEEWEE (11-12 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 4 ,Somerville 7

With only 8 skaters, the Pewee’s took on Somerville in Somerville. It was a 0-3 score going into the final period when the Peewees found the inner strength to fight back. At 10:03 Bethan Taddeo broke up a breakaway, passed up ice to a moving John Bernbaum who passed on a rail to Ronan Valarese who quick sticked it to make it 1-3. With 6:15 left in the 3rd Somerville drew the defense off the net and their hanger potted the puck to make it 1-4. Seconds later Bernbaum bent it into the corner of the opposing net to make it 2-4. A loose puck and a lucky shot put Somerville up 2-5. One more for the home team made it 2-6. M.E.B. pulled the goalie with three minutes remaining but even with two defensemen guarding the net Somerville scored to make it 2-7. M.E.B. was tired and hurting but never gave up on a Corey Rufo faceoff win which was passed up ice to a jetting Bernbaum who picked up his own rebound to make it 3-7. With just seconds remaining the Mustangs Sam Fosdick fought hard in the corner to dig out the puck, pass up ice to Valarese who served up a beauty with time running out to end the game M.E.B. 4 Somerville 7.

In the Boston Mayor’s Cup Tournament a schedule snafu found the Mustangs playing a 9:00 pm in Dorchester on Saturday night and an 8:00 pm game at Northeastern on Sunday night. Things did not go the Peewee’s way and their run in the double elimination tournament has come to an end.

BANTAM AAA (13-14 Years Old)

Malden/East Boston 2, New Hampshire East 2 Valley Forum, Haverhill MA

In Bantam AAA action the boys faced New Hampshire East on Saturday night. Sloppy play in the first had them struggling to stay in the game giving up the period to a 0-1 deficit. With hopes fading, Ryan Noonan dug deep and put on a show going the distance on a defensive zone dish from Zach Rich to tie up the game on Noonan’s short-handed beauty. Entering the third period and the boys still looking far from themselves, they did manage a power play goal from Noonan giving him credit for all of M.E.B.’s goals and despite a last ditch attack in final minutes it ended tied.

The Bantam’s hit the hometown ice Sunday afternoon to take on Belmont. In the 1st Louis Staffieri sent James Pandolfo off to the races on a beautiful neutral zone pass. Pandolfo screamed in on the opposing net undressing the netminder with a quick move, only 12 seconds into the game and M.E.B. was on top 1-0. However Belmont took advantage of slow skating and tied it up. With no step in their game, M.E.B. surrendered a second goal in the middle period to go down 2-1. They weather the storm in the third but suffered their first loss of the season. Bright spots continue to focus on the great play of goaltender Anthony Giuliano who made some amazing saves to keep these games close.
