Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo has ordered his leadership to officially begin discussing an expanded gaming bill at the beginning of May.
We applaud the speaker for beginning this important push.
This comes as great news locally, as an expanded gambling bill passed this year would likely lead to a casino at Suffolk Downs – and more importantly – to the creation of thousands of new jobs, the employment of hundreds of trades – people, the payment to the state of millions of dollars for a casino license and then the frosting on the cake, the investment of about $600 million in private capital for a casino and improved horse racing facilities at Suffolk Downs.
The speaker has made sure to remain aloof from the lobbying and the politicking swirling around the casino bill. He will come to the floor of the House this time with a bill the governor will sign.
For East Boston, where the speaker grew-up as a young man, Revere, which he represents today and Winthrop where he lives and which he represents, this bill is the biggest economic boost for his district to come down the line in the past half century.
With the speaker guiding this bill, the sky is the limit for his district and for East Boston and Revere, where the casino would likely be located.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. This is what caring about his district is all about.
