Ann Gianturco

Chelsea school nurse

Ann R. (Marino) Gianturco RN of Chelsea, formerly of Orient Heights East Boston, died on February 26. She was in her 95th year.

Mrs. Gianturco graduated from East Boston High School, Class of 1932 and received her RN from the Medfield State Hospital School of Nursing. She worked at the East Boston Relief Station on Porter Street and at the Revere Memorial Hospital. In 1941, she married Dr. Nicholas Gianturco and worked at his home office on Garfield Avenue in Chelsea and as the school nurse at the Shurtliff School in Chelsea until she was 76 years old.

The beloved wife of the late Dr. Nicholas D. Gianturco with whom she shared 51 years of marriage, she was the loving mother of Nicholas Gianturco Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Middleton, Judie Gianturco of California, Jeanne Jaroszewski of Melrose and Charles Gianturco and his wife, Lorraine, of North Reading. She was the dear sister of Florence Bruza of Naples, Florida, Theresa Curtin of Stoneham and the late Esther Corricelli, Grace Sacco, Margaret Cawa, Eleanor Johnston, Rita Marino, Frances Zuccaro, Leo Yano and Joseph Marino; cherished grandmother of 13 and great grandmother of 15.

Martha Kirk

Of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston

Martha (Salvi) Kirk of Winthrop, formerly East Boston, died on March 11.

She was the beloved wife of the late Earle Kirk with whom she shared 60 years of marriage; loving sister of Betty Conigliaro and her husband, Anthony, and Marie Elwell and her husband, Richard L., all of Sherborn and the late Albert M. and Americo Salvi; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Joseph Benkert

Former Pilot, Aviation Instructor and Author

Joseph W. Benkert of Nahant, formerly East Boston, died unexpectedly on March 10.

A US Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a former pilot for TWA, he was the proprietor of The Pilot Shop and Aviators Careers Instrument School in Norwood. He was the author of Introduction to Aviators Science.

He was the beloved husband of Janet (Tozza) Benkert with whom he shared 50 years of marriage; loving father of Joseph W. Benkert Jr. of Chicago and Gretchen Benkert of Nahant; dear brother of the late Phyllis Chambers.

Prudence Cerrone

East Boston resident

Prudence Cerrone of East Boston died on March 12.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Antonio and Francesca (Dragonetti) Cerrone; dear sister of Phyllis Cerrone and Elena Conroy, both of East Boston, and the late Joseph Cerrone, Mary Spelladora and Anthony Cerrone. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Marguerite Beresford

East Boston resident

Marguerite (O’ Brien) Beresford of East Boston died on March 9 following a long illness. She was 87 years old.

Mrs. Beresford was the beloved wife of the late James Beresford (Jimmy Ford); devoted mother of Sandra Dion of Mansfield, MA, James Jr. of Plainville MA and Patricia Granara of East Boston; loving grandmother of Brian and Shawn Dion, Jaclyn and Thomas Granara and great grandmother of Autumn Dion.

Funeral arrangements were private. A Memorial Mass will be held at the Don Orione Nursing Home on March 20 at 1 p.m. in the Don Orione Chapel, 111 Orient Avenue, East Boston. Memorial donations to the Don Orione Nursing Home will be gratefully appreciated.

Giulia (Diminico) Iacoviello of East Boston died suddenly on March 10.

She was the beloved wife of more than 51 years to Alfredo Iacoviello; dear sister of Rosina Coviello of East Boston and is also survived by her many loving nieces and nephews.

Marguerite N. (Velardo) Cuddi of Peabody, formerly of Orient Heights, died on March 9.

She was the wife of the late Anthony T. Viola L. Thomas of East Boston, formerly of Malden, died suddenly on March 6. She was 47 years old.

She was the devoted mother of Stephen Thomas Brown of East Boston; loving daughter of Ralph J.C. Thomas and the late Alice B (White) Thomas; beloved sister of Johanna White, Diane M. Thomas-Jackson, Ralph K. Thomas Jr, Renee Thomas-Collins and Stacey Thomas; dear half sister of Darrin, Kendal, Karen Thomas and Monica Love and is also survived by her many cherished nieces and nephews.

Gilda Marotta of Medford, formerly of East Boston, died on March 9.

She was the cherished daughter of the late Rosalia (Salvaggio) and Damiano Marotta; dear sister of Rose Falzone and her husband, John, of Toms River, NJ and the late Phyllis, Michael, Louis, Charles and Salvatore Marotta. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Massemina (Guarino) Buonopane of Medford, formerly of East Boston, died on March 9. She was in her 95th year.

She was the beloved wife of the late Pasquale Buonopane; loving mother of Mario Buonopane and his wife, Teresa, Achille Buonopane and his wife, Diana , Luigi Buonopane and his wife, Anna (proprietor’s of Pescatore Ristorante and Crowley Liquors, Somerville) all of Medford and the late Angelo Buonopane and Assunta Guarino and her husband, Nicola Guarino, of Italy. She is also survived by many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
