City Councillor Sal LaMattina and his many supporters in this neighborhood and elsewhere believed he would be the victor in the Probate Register contest. That victory did not materialize and when all was said and done, LaMattina got the short end of the stick. As surprising as Campatelli’s victory was to her, so too was LaMattina’s loss surprising to him.
LaMattina is a very predictable sort of man. He took the unexpected loss with the good graces of one who has always been magnanimous in victory. Now he got to be magnanimous in defeat.
He congratulated Campatelli warmly like a gentleman. He apologized to all those who put their faith in him and then he moved on.
After all, what is so bad about being a Boston City Councillor from this neighborhood?
There is an old expression that we cannot lose or suffer the loss of something we have never owned.
Such is the case with LaMattina and the Register’s post.
He may have thought and believed he was going to win but did an about face when the election went the other way.
He never lost his cool. He remained the same Sal LaMattina we have come to know and to like.
We wish him the best.
