In honor of Black History Month, East Boston resident Abdi Mohamed Warsame Dirie received the state’s Black Excellence on the Hill during a State House ceremony at the end of February.
The Black Excellence on the Hill award celebrates black culture, excellence, and achievement in the Commonwealth. The award by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Caucus honors the unsung heroes that make our communities thrive.
Abdi Mohamed Warsame Dirie was nominated for the award by East Boston State Rep. Adrian Madaro.
“I was honored to nominate longtime East Boston resident Abdi Mohamed Warsame Dirie for the 2021 Black Excellence Award from The Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus,” said Madaro. “Last year, Abdi created the Eastie Anti-Racism Coalition, a grassroots community group advancing equity and racial justice work in East Boston. Since then, he has helped increase civic engagement on issues of racial justice by heightening awareness of legislative efforts and community affairs impacting Black and Indigenous communities and communities of color.”
Dirie is a compassionate leader who invites people to take action to further equity, fairness and justice.
“Abdi is a proud Somali immigrant and refugee, and he embodies the very best of East Boston,” added Madaro. “Congratulations, Abdi, and thanks for all you do for our community.”
