Massport, Martin Richard Foundation Donate to PPSC

Both Massport and the Martin Richard Foundation have made donations to the Piers Park Sailing Center (PPSC) last week.

Massport made gave a $25,000 grant to PPSC, which allows the community sailing center to continue educational programs, such as “Science of Sailing” and “Ocean Science After School”, for students in East Boston, Winthrop, South Boston, Chelsea, and Revere while the Martin Richard Foundation sponsored a new jib for one of the center’s sail boats.

“Massport is an essential partner to PPSC. They built this great facility we have, and because of their sustained support we are able to keep our programs accessible to all East Boston families,” said PPSC Executive Director Alex DeFronzo. “A strong, inclusive environment is a key part of our mission and this will help us ensure that the public resource of Boston Harbor and the Harbor Islands are here for all to enjoy.  We are truly grateful for Massport’s ongoing support.”

Massport’s donation will also allow PPSC to provide over 600 children and teens with summer programming for July and August. This funding provides youths with pathways for mentorship, leadership, and other employment opportunities.

“The Piers Park Sailing Center is an invaluable community resource for our neighbors,” said Massport Acting CEO John Pranckevicius. “Not only do they provide sailing and marine science education for students in East Boston and surrounding communities, but they also promote physical and mental wellness activities. We applaud PPSC’s commitment to supporting healthy communities by helping hundreds of children and young adults develop meaningful life skills.”

The Martin Richard Foundation was founded by the Richard Family in honor of their son Martin Richard–the Dorchester boy that was one of three victims killed during the 2013 Marathon Bombings in Boston.

Through grants like these, the foundation provides opportunities for young people to learn, grow and lead through volunteerism and community engagement.

“Thanks to the Martin Richard Foundation Bridge Builder Campaign and our Future Leaders we have a new jib promoting peace, justice, and kindness,” said DeFronzo.
