Eastie Resident Killed by MBTA Bus in Chelsea

An East Boston woman walking back from shopping at Market Basket with another family member was struck and killed by an MBTA bus in Chelsea last Thursday morning.

Police identified the woman in the accident that occurred just before 6 a.m. last Thursday as 60-year-old Mary Ellen Pettiglio of East Boston.

The accident occurred near the Everett Ave. on-ramp to the Tobin Bridge. At the scene the bus was surrounded by police tape and appeared to be turning left onto the on-ramp when the accident occured. A dented shopping carriage was in the street and it appeared that Pettiglio and her companion were in the the crosswalk when they were struck by the bus. The other victim was not seriously harmed.

According to the MBTA the Route 111 bus operator has been with the T for 12 years and will be unable to drive until the investigation is complete. The driver also had to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol tests following the crash.    

The on-ramp was closed for several hours as police investigated the scene.

The MBTA said the accident is being investigated by the Transit, State and Chelsea Police with assistance from the Suffolk County DA’s Office and the MBTA.

Those who knew Mrs. Pettiglio took to social media following the incident to lend support and condolences to her family here in Eastie.
