Registration is open for the Mayor’s Cup; the action begins Oct. 3

Team registration is now open for the 16th annual Mayor’s Cup Youth Ice Hockey Tournament. The competition, sponsored by Comcast and the Boston Bruins Foundation, returns to Boston on October 3 and 4 and continues October 10 and 11 with finals on Sunday, October 18. The 2009 tournament is hosted by Boston Centers for Youth & Families and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.

“Over 1,000 boys and girls from all over Boston hit the ice in October to compete for the title of Boston’s Best,” said Mayor Thomas Menino. “All are invited to come cheer on their local players.”

The Boston Bruins will invite tournament players as their guests on September 26 to enjoy a Bruins game as they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets at TD Garden.

Tournament ice time has been made available by Northeastern University, Boston College, UMass-Boston, the City of Boston, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Facilities Management Company.

Teams hailing from East Boston, Dorchester, West Roxbury, Charlestown, South Boston, Allston-Brighton, and Hyde Park will be invited to compete for the coveted Mayor’s Cup in this year’s USA Hockey registered and sanctioned tourney.
