The East Boston Artists Group will host the annual East Boston Open Studios on Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, from noon-6 p.m. The event takes place at the Atlantic Works building located at 80 Border Street, East Boston.
East Boston Open Studios is an annual arts event that gives the public and artists an opportunity to connect, converse, and see original artwork. The Atlantic Works artist studio building is a community of professional artists with works on view and for sale. The participating artists work across a variety of media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, printmaking, jewelry, and more.
This year’s event ushers in an expansion of arts institutions in East Boston. Later this year, the Institute of Contemporary Art will unveil their new satellite space, The Watershed, in the East Boston Shipyard and Marina, and several new residential buildings plan to include gallery space.
“The artists at 80 Border Street welcome the exciting new art spaces that will be joining the East Boston Artists Group and the Atlantic Works Gallery to offer rich and diverse opportunities for the expression of arts and culture in the East Boston community,” says Diane Modica, an artist and lead Open Studios organizer. “The ICA and the new art galleries proposed at the Boston East and the Clippership Wharf sites promise to expand the venues for a community already rich in history and culture. Along with existing music and dance organizations such as Zumix and the Veronica Robles Cultural Center, we are really growing the local arts and cultural scene.”
The Open Studios weekend coincides with two events at Atlantic Works Gallery, also housed at 80 Border Street. In conjunction with the current exhibit “Boston Biennial 5,” artist Christine Comeau– the BB5 winner for performance– will perform her work on Saturday, April 21, at 4 p.m. The gallery will host a closing reception for BB5 on Sunday, April 22, from 4-6 p.m. During the event several BB5 artists will present five-minute talks about their work.
The Open Studios event is supported by several local institutions, including the East Boston Foundation, East Boston Savings Bank, and ZUMIX.
