Head of the maintenance department at East Boston High School for over 40 years
David C. Taft, a lifelong resident of East Boston and a longtime Boston Public School employee, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, August 20, 2026. He was 86 years old.
David was born in Boston on December 3, 1939. He was the son of the late Harold and Marie (Clark) Taft. David was raised and educated in East Boston and was a graduate of East Boston High School, Class of 1957.
An honorably discharged veteran, David proudly served his country as a member the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was assigned to the 102nd Air Police.
Following his time in the service, David began his career at East Boston High School where he became head of the maintenance department for over 40 years, until the time of his retirement.
David loved being outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and always had a green thumb, taking great pride in his garden. He enjoyed going out to eat and was a longtime patron of Jeveli’s in East Boston.
David was always very active and an avid health enthusiast.
He was also known for being an eclectic collector. He was always full of life and joy. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
He was the dear brother of Patricia Colbert of North Reading and Dennis “Apple” Taft of Wakefield, NH, the beloved uncle of Leslie Audet, Laurie Colbert, Derek Taft, Deanna Taft, Jake Taft and the late Dennis Taft; and the cherished great uncle of Jason, Zachary and Gabrielle. He is also lovingly survived by many cousins and extended family members.
A memorial service for David will be announced at a later date.
