Santarpio’s and Belle Isle Seafood garner ‘Best of Boston’ honors

East Boston has long been a food mecca and a place where things are done right from sandwiches to Italian food to Mexican to Brazilian cuisines so it’s no surprise when an East Boston eatery shows up on Boston Magazine’s annual ‘Best of Boston’ issue.

Boston magazine named two area businesses among 194 winners in its 37th annual issue.

Of course, Santarpio’s Pizza was named 2010 Best of Boston for Affordable Pizza. With eight slice cheese pies starting at $9.50 the famed pizzeria has hardly raised the roof on prices in decades.

Here at ‘Tarps (as it’s locally known) one can feed an army of hungry kids meet up with friends for a few slices or entertain a group for short money.

Established in 1903 as a bakery, Santarpio’s, as it stands today, gained widespread popularity for its pizza in the 1960s and is planning on opening a second location this summer in Peabody.

The second eatery to receive the Best of Boston honor was Belle Island Seafood for its scrumptious Lobster Roll. Here, a half pound of succulent lobster meat is tossed lightly with a little mayo and piled high on hotdog bun. Around lunchtime everyday, you can see the counter that overlooks Saratoga Street and the Winthrop Bridge packed with patrons scoffing down the decadent sandwich.

At $16.99 for prime lobster meat the seafood joints signature sandwich comes with a side of fries, onion rings, coleslaw or rice pilaf.

Aside from the roll, Belle Isle turns out other super fresh seafood choices like fish and chips and also runs a successful retail business dealing in fresh caught fish that delivered each day.

For the past 12 months, Boston Magazine’s team of expert judges ate, drank, and shopped their way across the metro area in order to find the Best of Boston. This year the magazine debuts 67 categories—from best CSA to best handbag designer—as well as something totally new: essays by an all-star cast of writers who explain what they love most about the Hub. In other words—it’s the same great Best of Boston, only better.

Boston Magazine touts itself as the voice that captures the best of contemporary life in the city and beyond for more than a half million monthly readers.
