Atlantic Works Gallery Presents ‘The Noun Show’

Atlantic Works Gallery is pleased to invite you to the Third Thursday Reception of its June exhibition The Noun Show by Eric Hess and Jean M. Bernstein on Thursday, June 19, from 6 to 9 pm.

“A noun is a person, place or thing. American members of Generation X grew up glued to the TV, and will remember this from watching Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday mornings. In planning for this show, Jean M. Bernstein and Eric Hess looked at their work and decided a bit of their photography leans towards the objective side of art. The images encompass a person, place or thing. Hence, these Gen X members’ memories were sparked by the jingle from their childhood.

Jean M. Bernstein is a photographer from the Midwest who now lives in East Boston. Travelling has opened opportunities for her to explore diverse cultures, landscapes, and experiences. She feels that by highlighting the familiar aspects within the unfamiliar, we can better understand and appreciate each other. Seeing something familiar can be a catalyst for bringing people together. It is often those moments of recognition and understanding that pave the way for meaningful connections.

Eric Hess, an East Boston resident for many years, is a photographer who has been showing at Atlantic Works for 22 years. For The Noun Show, he is getting back to his roots which started with photography. In this show, Hess will show a group of photos that are inspired by one his favorite photographers Elliott Erwitt. Hess will also show some of his travel photography from over the years. He was inspired to look back at this body of work after seeing Bernstein’s photography in the past two years. Most of this series was taken with a Holga Camera with the intention to keep his style loose and whimsical.”

The exhibition will run until June 28.

Atlantic Works Gallery, now in its twenty-second year, is an artist-run collaborative space for art and ideas in East Boston.
