He was a graduate of Boston English High School, Class of 1947. Following High School, John attended Newman Preparatory School and then decided to enlist in the United States Army. He proudly served his country and was honorably discharged.

He married Nancy (Socci) on August 22, 1954. The couple remained in East Boston and several years later they welcomed their only child, their daughter, Catherine “Cathy.”

John held his Maritime License and worked on boats for all his working career. He worked his way up through the ranks on tug boats, steadily rising to the top position as Captain. He navigated tug boats throughout Boston Harbor and the northeast for several companies such as Perini Corporation, Hydro Dredging Company and lastly, Boston Towing & Transportation (a division of the Reinauer Transportation Companies), from which he retired. John was dedicated and passionate about his work and thoroughly enjoyed his years on the water.

At a young age, John was taught the trades of plumbing, electrical work and general carpentry.  Fifty plus years ago, upon purchasing his current home, John gutted and renovated the property doing everything from building and installing the cabinetry, doing all of the plumbing and electrical work, installing drop ceilings, windows and flooring, painting, wallpapering, etc.   And all of this work was done during down time from his full time job on the boats.

He also had a “green thumb” and a knack for growing flowers and plants. He enjoyed listening to music, one of his favorite singers being Dean Martin.  He enjoyed playing piano, doing home projects, watching classic movies, documentaries, the history channel, true crime shows and a good western. He was always eager to help family, friends and neighbors.

The beloved husband of 66 years of the late Nancy L. (Socci) Barbero, he was the loving father of Catherine L. “Cathy” Liberatore and her husband, Robert R. of Wilmington; cherished grandfather of Anthony J. Liberatore of Boston’s North End; dear brother of the late Gilda M. He is also lovingly survived by several Barbero and Socci nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

From your daughter, rest in peace my beautiful Father.  I will carry you forever in my heart.  Until we meet again.
