Boston Children’s Chorus Partners With Zumix for New Program

This month, the Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) Executive Director Andrés Holder announced the BCC will be expanding programming and setting up shop right here in East Boston through a partnership with Zumix.

The BCC’s new neighborhood choir program will train singers ages 7-11 on Saturday mornings at the Zumix Firehouse on Sumner Street.

“As we enter our 20th anniversary season, BCC is proud to partner with ZUMIX to expand the number of communities we reach and bring our programming into new neighborhoods throughout Greater Boston,” said Holder. “ZUMIX is a natural fit in terms of both programming and mission. We can’t wait to add more voices from East Boston to BCC’s beautiful song!”

Holder said to celebrate its 20th anniversary season (2022-23) BCC decided to partner with Zumix as part of new neighborhood programs that will mark the BCC expansion into new areas throughout Greater Boston.

For over three decades Zumix has been regarded as a well-respected creative youth development nonprofit with award-winning music and creative technology programs, aimed at equipping youth with the tools they need to reach their full potential.

“ZUMIX is so excited to host BCC’s new East Boston training youth choral initiative on Saturday mornings next school year,” said Zumix Co-Founder and Executive Director Madeleine Steczynski. “Both of our organizations believe in the power of music to uplift lives and community. We look forward to working more closely with BCC and to having more music in Eastie next year.”

Founded by Boston civil rights icon Hubie Jones in 2003, BCC’s 20th anniversary season will celebrate the city’s history of civil rights activism and draw attention to the work still to be done. Holder said while exploring an inequitable past and the generational impact of those injustices in the Boston of today, BCC singers will celebrate the anniversary by recommitting to the chorus’ core mission of inspiring inquiry, cultivating empathy, and becoming future generations of Boston leaders.

The organization serves more than 500 youth through after school and summer programs.

BCC’s season kicks off in September and includes collaborations with award-winning artists including White Snake Projects and hip-hop artist/activist Zakiyyah. BCC singers in various choruses will perform at Boston Symphony Hall, Old South Church, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport, Mass. and more.

Singers ages 7-18 are invited to participate in BCC’s 20th anniversary season. To learn more, visit: https://www.bostonchildrenschorus.org/.
