UNITE HERE Local 26, Boston’s Hotel and Food Workers Union, Endorses Ayanna Pressley for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District

The Ayanna Pressley for Congress campaign announced that the Boston-area hotel and food workers union, UNITE HERE Local 26, will endorsed Ayanna Pressley for the 7th Congressional District.  The nearly 10,000-member union is one of the most diverse and politically active organizations in the City of Boston, representing workers in the hospitality industry across the city. The announcement will be made as the union meets to discuss their participation in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination earlier this month. Twenty-six members of Local 26 participated in the Memphis March and Rally on April 4.  The meeting will be held in Dudley Square at the Union’s Hospitality Training Center.

“The hardworking men and women of UNITE HERE Local 26 keep our region’s economy moving, and I’m absolutely thrilled to have their endorsement. Too often, their workers are an invisible part of our city, and the incredible work of Local 26 has helped elevate our consciousness about the struggles facing many of their members,” said Councilor Pressley. “As the wealth gap continues to widen, pathways to the middle class provided by these jobs couldn’t be more important, and I look forward to continuing my advocacy on behalf of all workers in Washington.”

“Ayanna Pressley is a visionary voice. She is always there for us,” said Karan Burton, Vice President of UNITE HERE Local 26 and a Roxbury resident. “We want to send someone to DC who reflects our community and our organization. We agree with her that ‘change cannot wait.’”

“We are proud to endorse a candidate who has been a relentless advocate for her community and given voice to the issues of inequality that impact their lives every single day,” said Local 26 President Brian Lang. “Ayanna Pressley has worked closely with us at Boston City Hall and we look forward to working with her in the halls of Congress.”

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103 has also endorsed Ayanna’s candidacy. Last week, the campaign announced the endorsement of Chelsea City Council President Damali Vidot.

Ayanna Pressley for Congress announced  that the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 103, a labor union representing more than 8,000 workers along with thousands of retirees across Massachusetts, has endorsed her campaign for the 7th Congressional District.

“I am incredibly humbled to have earned the support of Local 103. Their emphasis on providing pathways to the middle class for all their members truly exemplifies the power workers have when they organize,” said Pressley. “Their focus on creating spaces for women and people of color in the trades is a model that has been replicated nationally, and one that I have been proud to support on the Boston City Council. As workers and their unions face increased threats in Washington, I will proudly fight for them in Congress.”

“IBEW Local 103 is proud to endorse Ayanna Pressley in her campaign for the Democratic nomination for the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District. Ayanna is fighting for all of us, and that is something we desperately need in Washington right now.”

The endorsement follows last week’s announcement that Damali Vidot, President of the Chelsea City Council endorsed Ayanna’s candidacy. Last week, the campaign also announced that it had raised over $364,000 from more than 1,500 donors in the first two months of the campaign, and celebrated numerous organizing milestones, including having activated more than 300 volunteers across the district, appearing at 30 Democratic ward, town and city caucuses, and bringing more than 40 volunteers out for the campaign’s first “Day of Action” across every city and town in the district.

Massachusetts’ Leading Fire Fighters Union Endorses Congressman Michael E. Capuano for Re-election

Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts urge voters in 7th Congressional District to support leading advocate for working families

Massachusetts largest labor organization representing firefighting professionals in Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District, the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM), has endorsed U.S. Representative Michael E. Capuano for re-election.

The PFFM cited Capuano’s longstanding support for firefighters on key legislative priorities, including the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program, support for legislation that would allow use of federal grant money and funds to hire laid-off firefighters (SAFER Act), and advocacy for working families, in supporting his campaign for re-election. “Our membership wholeheartedly endorses the re-election of Michael Capuano to Congress,” said Richard MacKinnon, Jr., president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts. “The Congressman has been a passionate leader on issues that matter to working families and has shown steadfast commitment to the needs of local fire departments across the Commonwealth.”

“Michael Capuano gives firefighters and working families a real voice in Washington every single day,” said John “Jay” Colbert, District 3 Vice President of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) representing Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. “Congressman Capuano doesn’t pay lip service to public safety issues, he gets results that make a difference.”

“I am grateful to receive endorsements from the brave men and women who put their lives on the lines every day to protect all of us from harm,” said Congressman Capuano. “The firefighting community makes families safer by dedicating their lives to public service. My promise to them, and all of my constituents, is that I will work every day to fight for the issues that matter the most, including protecting Social Security and Medicare benefits, reducing the costs of healthcare and medicine, and opposing destructive policies that undermine public service.”

The PFFM represents over 12,000 dedicated public employees in the Commonwealth.

Congressman Capuano has been endorsed for re-election by an array of labor organizations, progressive champions, and leading elected officials such as civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis, who called Capuano “a leader alongside those of us opposing the unfair and immoral policies of the Trump Administration” who shows “courage on so many issues,” including income inequality, civil rights, gun control, health care, affordable housing, gender pay inequity, immigration and transportation.
