Perfect Attendance Means $5,000 For Lucky Kindergarten Student

A lot of kinder gardeners and their parents will be shooting for perfect attendance this year for the chance to win some college scholarship money.

At Friday’s Countdown to Kindergarten Parade, East Boston Main Streets (EBMS) Director Max Gruner announced that Main Streets has teamed up with Airmall have to present a $5,000 college scholarship to an East Boston Kindergartner.

This scholarship will be in the form of a 529 college savings bond and will be awarded contingent upon perfect attendance.

“We realize the importance of getting kids to school regularly and punctually,” said Gruner. “We also realize the many challenges many families experience trying to ensure attendance of their children. We are glad not only to offer this scholarship to the East Boston community, but to also tie it directly to attendance and to have it serve as an additional incentive for families to be actively involved in their youngsters education.”

EBMS will partner with BPS and will announce every quarter the students with the perfect attendance record who are eligible for the scholarship.

“Our hope is to encourage families to ensure their kids are present at school every day,” said Sonia Gomez-Banrey, director of BPS’ Countdown to Kindergarten program, “Our hope would be to identify several eligible students by the end of this coming school year whom we can then enter into a raffle for this scholarship.” 
Mike Caro, vice president of Airmall, who led the parade down Meridian Street was instrumental in creating this scholarship.

“We are so pleased being able to support these rising Kindergartners of East Boston. So many of our employees are East Boston residents and it is extremely rewarding to be able to support this community in meaningful ways,” said Caro.
