Through an anonymous donation the East Boston YMCA will get to work this summer constructing a Credit Recovery Lab at the Y’s Bremen Street facility for East Boston High School (EBHS) students.
The $25,000 anonymous donation will create a state-of-the-art learning center at the Y for the 2013-2014 school year. The classroom space and computer lab will serve as the headquarters for the Y’s Credit Recovery and Remediation (CRR) Program, a partnership between the Y and EBHS designed to support students with the supplemental learning programs they need to stay in school and graduate.
Each year approximately 100 EBHS students are not promoted to the next grade due to poor grades and failure to achieve the proper number of credits and approximately 50 students drop out each year. The CRR will enable students who have failed a class or not received full credit for classes during the school year to be able to make up credits on-line during out of school time, at their own pace, at the Y.
“The CRR will provide local students with a second chance to make-up work and lost credits at their own pace, out of school. For many students this will make the difference between repeating a year and moving forward with their peers or graduating on time or not graduating at all,” said East Boston Y Executive Director Joey Cuzzi.
