Samuel Baptista

Retired Boston Police Detective

Samuel “Sam” Baptista, a retired Boston Police Detective, of Orient Heights East Boston, died unexpectedly on July 17.

A US Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Beachmont Post VFW and East Boston Post 77 D.A.V.

He was the beloved husband of the late Gloria (Carresi) Baptista with whom he shared 57 years of marriage; loving father of Richard Baptista and his wife, Maria and Donna Baptista-Bean and her husband, Philip, all of East Boston and Linda Tassinari and her husband, James of Peabody; dear brother of Billy Baptista and his wife, Yvonne of East Boston an the late Fred “Cubie” Baptista and his wife, Laura of Revere; cherished grandfather of Samantha and Kenneth DeModena, Kristen Baptista, Danielle and Matthew Becker, Ericka Bean, Nikki, Michael and James Tassinari and great grandfather of Mya Maria deModena and Lucas Philip Becker.

Theresa Brennan

Former owner of T-Rose Florist in Melrose

Theresa R. “Terry” Brennan, of Port Charlotte, Florida died on July 3.

She was born May 1, 1949 in Boston and moved to Florida in 2004 from Melrose.  She was the former owner for 17 years of T-Rose Florist in Melrose.

Survivors include her loving mother Helen Brennan of East Boston; her sisters, Joni DiMarzo of East Boston,  Gina Iannelli of East Boston; her brother, Danny Brennan of Andover; her long time companion, Al McKenney of Port Charlotte, FL and her nieces and nephew, Laura Rogers, Tanya Iannelli, Tara Barton, Dan Brennan, Gina DiMarzo and Joni DiMarzo. She also leaves many great nieces and nephews and many loving friends.  She was the daughter of the late William Brennan.

A Mass will be held on July 23 at 9 a.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Church in East Boston. Arrangements were made in Port Charlotte Florida.

Mary McGeney

Of Beverly, formerly of East Boston and Peabody

Mary E. (Doyle) McGeney of Beverly, formerly of Peabody and East Boston, died peacefully on July 17 at Beverly Hospital with her family by her side. She was 84 years old.

The devoted wife of the late Joseph Nicholas McGeney, she was born in East Boston on May 3, 1928, the daughter of the late James and Josephine (Murphy) Doyle. She was raised and educated in East Boston and lived in Peabody for more than 40 years before moving to Beverly 27 years ago.

She had been a free lance reporter with the former Peabody Times for many years. Later she was a lab technician at the J.B. Thomas Hospital in Peabody and while living in Beverly, she worked in the customer service department at Johnny Appleseeds Company.

She loved to read and sew costumes and dresses for her family. She was considered the matriarch of the McGeney family and cherished supporting her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She had been a member of the Vittori – Rocci Post of Beverly and the North Shore Twins Association.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Peabody School-committeeman David and his wife Stephanie McGeney of Peabody, Marianne and Albert DeVito and Bethany and Robert Phipps, all of Beverly, Claudia and Paul Eaton, Bernadette and Vincent Smith and Barbara and Peter Smyrnois, all of Peabody; a sister-in-law, Marylyn Doyle of Hull; her cherished grandchildren, Brett, Josianne and Jami, Sean and Katie, Sharon and Emily and Michael, David and Bradley and Dean Ryan; her great grandchildren, Chase, Kaelyn, Annalee and Charlie and her precious dog, Larry. She was the grandmother of the late Maura McGeney and the sister of the late Lorraine Cody, Walter, Arthur and Ralph Doyle and Virginia Mc Donough.

A Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Her Funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. from the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John’s Church, Peabody at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Maria Pinto

Volunteer Senior Home Companion

Maria A. (Giglio) Pinto of Revere died on July 13.

A volunteer senior home companion, she was the beloved wife of the late Nicholas Pinto, the devoted mother of Diane Brown of East Boston and Nicholas Pinto of Revere; dear sister of Frank Giglio of Florida and the late Pasquale, Charles and Vincent Giglio and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Joseph DeSimone, Jr.

30-year Cott Beverage employee

Joseph M. DeSimone, Jr. of Needham died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on July 15. He was 89 years old.

A graduate of English High School Class of 1940, he was a US Army veteran of World War II, a 30 year employee of Cott Beverage, former President of the Varsity Dance Club at the Sherry Biltmore Hotel and die hard Red Sox fan. He was a very generous and charitable man who loved people, children and animals.

The loving son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Jannini) DeSimone, he was the brother of Robert R. DeSimone of Acton and the late Lucas L. DeSimone and Helena Colton; uncle of Marguerite Fleury of Revere, Patricia Eaton of Hudson, NH and Camille Flaherty of Salem NH; great uncle of Michelle, Mark and Christina. He also leaves his wonderful neighbors and numerous friends.

His Funeral will be held from the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave., Needham today, Wednesday, July 20 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Of Revere, formerly of East Boston

Giuseppe Joe Mattaliano of Revere, formerly of East Boston, died on July 16. He was 54 years old.

He was the beloved son of the late Angelo and Carmela (Schillaci) Mattaliano; loving father of Johnathan and Alexander Mattaliano and step father of Crystal Wright; cherished brother of Salvatore Mattaliano, Lina Favuzza, Giovanni and Alphonso Mattaliano, and the late Rosario Mattaliano and is also survived by many loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

His Funeral will be held from the Rapino Memorial Home, 9 Chelsea St. (Maverick Square) East Boston today,  Wednesday, July 20 at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Church, on the corner of Brooks and Paris Streets at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Susan Keohane

State and MBTA retiree

Susan Keohane of Revere, formerly of Jeffries Poiint, East Boston, died on July 15 after a long illness. She was 68 years old.

A retiree of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the MBTA, she was the daughter of the late James J., Sr. and Josephine A. (Clericuzio) Keohane and sister of the late James J. “Beansie” Keohane, Jr.; devoted companion of Frank L. Stibolt, Jr. of Revere; cherished Godmother of Kara A. Pernice of East Falmouth. She is also lovingly survived by many cousins.

Violet Sarno

Of Somerville, formerly of East Boston

Violet R. (Muscarelli) Sarno of Somerville, formerly of East Boston, died on July 15. She was 85 years old.

She was the beloved wife of 64 years to Frank A. Sarno, Sr.; devoted mother of Frank Sarno and his wife, Annie of Somerville, Ralph Sarno and Ann of Port St. Lucie, FL and Michael Sarno and his wife, Diane of Saugus. She is also survived by three loving grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the dear sister of Vinny Ingaciola, Ronnie Muscarelli, and the late Ann Shick and Millie DeMayo.

She was the beloved wife of the late Edward F. Dolan; daughter of the late Margaret (Hevran) and James Sullivan; mother of Edward F. Dolan Jr. and his wife, Maria of Swampscott, Toby A. Dolan and her husband, Fred Franciosa of Florida, Tracey C. Ganiatsos and her husband, Nick of Lexington, Thomas J. Dolan of Salem and the late Robert M. Dolan; sister of James of Salem and the late John, George, Louis and Mary Sullivan; grandmother of Cristina, Stephanie, James, Alana, Scott and Nicolette.

William L. Ferruzzi of Revere died on July 13.

Theresa M. Ryan in Winthrop of East Boston died on July 12.

Kevin McDonough, Jr.

Fought long and courageous battle with Cerebral Palsy

Kevin M. McDonough, Jr. of East Boston died on July 11 after a long and courageous battle with Cerebal Palsy. He was 32 years old.

Kevin, who enjoyed supporting East Boston Pop Warner and Little League, was the loving son of Maryellen (Serino) Mosca and her husband, Nicholas of East Boston; adored brother of Stacey Scott and her husband. Shane of Wakefield, formerly of East Boston, Nicholas Mosca and his fiancée, Lisa Ferrara of Revere, formerly of East Boston, Michael and Anthony Mosca, both at home; cherished grandson of Anthony and Marie (Olivieri) Serino,Thomas McDonough and the late Gloria (Scarpa) McDonough ,Carole (Grieco) Mosca and the late Anthony “Chubby” Mosca, all of East Boston. He is also survived by many fond aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Angelo Scarpetta of Revere, formerly of East Boston, died on June 10.

A US Army veteran of the Korean War and a former employee of the US Postal Service, South Postal Annex, he was the beloved husband of Carmella (Bonarrigo) Scarpetta with whom he shared 57 years of marriage;  dear brother of James of New York and the late Angelina Grebb, Phyllis Murphy, Anthony, Domenic and John Scarpetta and fond uncle of many nieces and nephews.

John DeFronzo

IT consultant

John J. DeFronzo of Somerset Avenue, Winthrop, died at home on July 10 after a long illness. He was 50 years old.

Born in Boston, he lived in East Boston before moving to Winthrop. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard and was honorably discharged as a HST 3rd Class in 1984. He was the proprietor of Cyberworks Inc. for over eight years before joining Vital Networks in Lynnfield as an IT consultant. He was also a member of Danvers Fish and Game.

He was the beloved husband of 25 years of Lorraine (Skomro) and the loving father of Alex and Rachel DeFronzo, both of Winthrop; cherished son in law of Marie and Frank Skomro.

Joseph DeSisto

US Postal Service retiree

Joseph DeSisto, an East Boston native and US Postal service retiree, died following a brief illness on July 10 at the Bear Hill Nursing & Rehab. of Wakefield. He was 98 years old.

Mr. DeSisto was born and raised in South Framingham and came to East Boston with his family at a young age. The family moved to Revere in 1960 and he spent the past five years as a resident of the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home.

Mr. DeSisto entered the US Navy in August of 1935 and served until February of 1945 with the rank of Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class. He retired in 1973 with more than 35 years of service with the US Postal Service working as a Postal Clerk at South Postal Annex. He was also a member of the National Association of the DAV.

His late wife, Joan G. (Sbordone) died on June 2, 2010. He was the beloved father of Mary Ann DeSisto of Lynn, Camille M. DeSisto of Medford and Stephanie R. DeSisto of Revere; devoted brother of Albert Pavone of Jamaica Plain, Alice Pearson of Somerville and the late Emile Pavone. He is also lovingly survived by many cherished nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Martha Grella

Martha R. (Chiuve) Grella of Revere, formerly of East Boston and Hyde Park, died on July 10. She was in her 91st year.

She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph J. Grella with whom she shared 59 years of marriage; loving mother of Stephen Grella and his wife, Nadine of Mansfield, Karen Grella of Stoughton and Patricia Goneau and her husband, Paul of New Hampshire; cherished grandmother of Jennifer Thompson and her husband, Gerard and Jonathan Goneau and great grandmother of  Mercedes Thompson; dear sister of Josephine LoBue of California, Margaret Cardoza of Wakefield, Alfred Chiuve of Stoneham and the late Michael and Emmanuel Chiuve.
